*Websites (Brasil): Agency Andetur NGO/ONG ASSOCIATION ABTC-BRASIL"We are privileged to be located in a very lovely region of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, in the northeast of Brazil, and on the banks of the beautiful and unpolluted lake Gargalheiras The lake provides an alternative to riding. You may fish, swim or kayak in the clear emerald water.
Horseback riding
We plan to take full advantage of our location and offer scenic horseback rides along the rural dirt roads that connect one farm to another.During these leisurely rides we will visit local historical attractions and observe wildlife, the ecological reserve RPPN Sernativo, and the numerous archelogical sides located within 15 km of the ranch headquarters.
Eco Tourism
If you want to explore the sertão looking for orchids, bromeliads, lizards or other wildlife, we have miles of 'caatinga' full of rocks and streams and even waterfalls to get lost in. You can follow our trails or take off on your own... here ajoining the farm is a small private nature reserve and will be working to improve it planting missing native species, trying to restore a small part of the natual 'caatinga'.
Neighboring property with small pousada - Pé da Serra
Brazilian Food
You don't have to be always "up and at 'em". We will feed you great Brazilian meals like feijoada and churrasco. We will have an organic vegetable garden for the freshest vegetables and manioc. The 'horta' project, to be cared for by the resident community, also will work with medicinal plants from the 'caatinga'. We, the community, can produce our own milk and eggs and we like to try our hand at homemade jams, cheese and preserves.
We will have our own beekeeping operation to produce honey. We serve free range chicken and turkey and always have our own lamb on the menu. We serve a Brazilian dessert with every home cooked meal.
Relaxation
We like relaxing on the varanda and getting to know our guests. We will serve local beer and wine and make you caipirinhas for the real Brazilian experience.
If you speak some Portuguese you can practice here. We are native English speakers and are bilingual but most of the staff speaks only Portuguese so you'll have plenty of chance to see if you can communicate. If you don't speak at all it won't be a handicap because we'll always be available if you need us.
And while we're all sitting around relaxing we can help you get acquainted with the real lifestyle of this part of the world. We will play Brazilian music for you and we can talk politics and tell you about the history of the Seridó and what's up in Brazilian agriculture and social changes and help you go back home with some real knowledge about what life in the interior Brazil is all about.
Traveling
If you are traveling in Brazil, spend a few days off the beaten track here with us and get to know the non-touristy side of the country. We are flexible and short-stayers and last-minute guests are welcome.
We are only 217 KM from the capital city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, and are located in the center of the Roteiro Seridó. We are easy driving distance to other major attractions in the Seridó and offer day trips to other communities.

In Brazil for Work
Spend a weekend (or longer) here with us away from the pollution and crime you find in the big cities. Bring your family. Relax and enjoy Rural Brazil at it's Best.Kids will Love it Here
They will experience the natural world in a natural way. The chickens and turkeys lay eggs. Eggs hatch! Milk comes from a cow not a jug. They can even help milk the cows. Baby lambs or goats are always around and often drink from bottles.
We will have ponies to ride, small friendly donkeys too, and a pony cart. Older kids can ride the big horses if they like and go kayaking and in the lake, exploring in the country side, and meet local families on neighboring farms.
Share a week here with your kids. It's a vacation they will always remember."
About the RPPN Sernativo
Sernativo is an ecological reserve located on the shores of the Gargalheiras reservoir. Created by Dra. Cecilia Medieras in 1996 as an RPPN (Reservas Particulares do Patrimônio Natural) Sernativo – recognized by IBAMA, registered officially in portaria nº 109/96, the reserve was created to develop research activities, provide a base for ambiental education and ecotourism, using aspects of regional culture, such as the use of medicinal plants and sertaneja cooking. Besides offering a proposal for tourism that doesn’t injure the ambient, the reserve has to offer interesting options for its visitors.
Developed on the ranch Sitio José Gonçalves (named after a famous nordestino poet and writer, who died in an accident that also killed ex-governor Dix-Sept Rosado), by the youngest sister of Sr. José Gonçalves, Dra. Cecília Medeiros (biologist), the area consists of 180 hectares (close to 600 acres) in the area of Carnaubinha, município of Acari, the Sernativo Project, as proposed by Capt. Donald Reid, has as its basic collective work program studying the richness provided by the natural resources of the ranch itself, combining agrícola -social development with recuperation and protection of nature. The proposal is to continue the work of Dra. Cecilia, to conduct methods of preservation of the species representative of the caatinga, experimentation agro-industrial, cataloging and selection of medicinal plants and native herbs.
RPPN’s represent an important mechanism of public/private participation, as a major thought is to involve the local community in the conservation of biological diversity. By use of the RPPN status, the private property is providing its contribution to the protection of the ambient and increases the possibility significantly to create a scene with more protected areas, in terms of both quantity and quality.
The project already exists and the proposal is to continue with the initial objectives. Final execution of this project therefore depends on initial investment and resources to be financed, and the project is already well known by local government agencies.
OBS: There are three RPPN’s in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The RPPN Sernativo is the only one of the three dedicated to conservation of the caatinga, which is the natural vegetation in the sertão region of the northeastern part of Brazil . The name "caatinga" is a indigenous word meaning "open forest" or "open vegetation". It covers about 700,000 km 2. The caatinga has a semi-arid climate with average annual temperatures of about 28 °C. The area has a very hot and dry winter and a hot and rainy summer. The rivers of the caatinga only run during the rainy summers and in some places the streams are interrupted during the dry winters. The vegetation consists mainly of open shrubs that are resistant to drought.
The Seridó shelters the caatinga, unique biome in the world, exclusively brazilian. The caatinga is a type of vegetal formation with well defined characteristics: low trees and bushes that, in general, lose their foliage in the dry season. During the first few rains in the beginning of the year, the caatinga loses its rude aspect and quickly becomes green and flowery.
People use many plant species from the caatinga region. Palms are very important to the economy in northeast Brazil . People from this area are greatly dependant on extraction from babassu, carnaúba, tucúm and macaúba, from which lauric and oleic oils are made from. Many trees are also used for lumber in this area, including these species: Anadenanthera macrocarpa, Ziziphus joazeiro, Amburana cearensis, Astronium fraxinifolium, Astronium urundeuva, Tabebuia impetiginosa, Tabebuia caraiba and Schinopsis brasiliensis, Cedrela odorata, Dalbergia variabilis, Didymopanax morototoni and Pithecellobium polycephalum. Some plants are also used for medical purposes.

Donald Richard Reid – owner of the tour operator agency Andetur Brasil Ltda . and president of the NGO/ONG ASSOCIAÇÂO ABTC-BRASIL, is registered with IBAMA – Ministério do Meio Ambiente – as Técnico Federal N° 235492 “Uso de Recursos Naturais / utilização do patrimônio natural; Turismo / complexos turísticos e de lazer, inclusive parques temáticos”
"I wanted to work for a company that is part of a society and contributes to it. I wanted to invest, but I also wanted something to believe in.."
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand." -- Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of US.
And I remembered my dream from decades ago: to establish a mecca for the international traveler, a community where we were the "natives", where we didn't feel like foreigners, where we all could do something, where nobody would have to be afraid of the question "What do you do?", where nobody would feel as though he were incomplete or unnecessary or a burden, where we would feel whole and in control and useful and wanted, and from where WE could enrich the world.
"Going that extra mile for our customers isn’t an obligation - it’s just what we do."
