Boat Project - Gargalheiras

As part of Andetur Brazilian Travel Club´s Acari project, Capt. Donald Reid, president of both the USA division of the club (NGO) and the Brazilian division (ONG - Associação ABTC-Brasil) is starting construction of two shallow draft catamarans scheduled to provide ecotours on the açude Gargalheiras.

Proposed length of each is 36 ft with a beam of 10 ft. Construction of the pontoons - frames local hardwoods covered by marine grade plywood manufactured in the Amazon. The hulls will then be covered with fiberglass as pictured.

Not shown in the picture above is the special marine composting tiolets which will be imported from the United States. Gargalheiras is a water reservoir providing drinkable water for local communities.

Composting

Composting is simply nature's method of renewing and preserving itself. In nature, decayed organic material, whether plant or animal, gradually decomposes and becomes either water or enriched soil, very much like your garden compost.

But, the ongoing preservation of our precious lakes, rivers and streams is a problem that we all must accept responsibility for. Most conventional toilet systems such as septic tanks or standard toilets that flush overboard were not developed with the environment in mind, so they are often a major cause of unnecessary pollution.

Envirolet® Composting Toilet Systems help nature's proven method by reducing and recycling waste into natural compost, while using little or no water in the process.

Power units for the tour boats will be 40 hp. non-polluting 4-stroke outboard motors.

As part of the project, boat operators or guides will be selected and trained from the local fishermans community at Gargalheiras who are familiar with the lake and the river..
